A RAM disk is a portion of memory set aside forthe storage of documents and applications. It works like a hard disk, but because RAM is much faster, it takes less time for the computer toaccess files stored in it. RAM disks are ideal for storing largenumbers of small, frequently accessed files, such as the caches ofWeb browsers. However, because the contents ofRAM disks are irretrievably lost when the computer shuts down orotherwise loses power, they are not appropriate for the storage ofimportant files. Also, memory used for a RAM disk is not availablefor running applications.
